I was searching through the list of filmfare winners through out the passing years and found the list in bollywood hungama article

I always wondered if filmfare awards have been received by the musicians who duly deserved and after reading out the list, I am now confirmed that filmfare has been very unfair to many musicians..

Filmfare Awards Facts

Music Directors

Best Music director was the only category in the Music genre that started with the birth of Filmfare Awards in 1953.

The top five Music Directors on the basis of number of times they have won the award are:

  • Shankar-Jaikishen – 9
  • Laxmikant-Pyarelal – 7
  • A.R. Rehman – 5
  • Nadeem-Shravan – 4
  • R.D.Burman – 3

Shankar-Jaikishen (1970,1971,1972), Laxmikant Pyarelal (1977,1978,1979) and Nadeem Shravan (1990,1991,1992) are the only music directors to have made a hattrick in winning the Best Music Director award.

Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati) is the only music director to have 100% winning and nomination ratio. He has been nominated just once and has won.

Madan Mohan never won a Filmfare award inspite of being nominated thrice, so is the case with Viju Shah who has been nominated for four times.

SD Burman has received filmfare award for Abhimaan and Taxi Driver though he was nominated for 5 other films

Naushad has received filmfare for just Baiju Bawra..

During the time of Nadeem Shravan, there were not much competitions and so the duo dominated the music industry.. But its really surprising that Madan Mohan never received any award..

Best Playback Singers

Awards for playback singing also started in 1958 and would you believe that for 9 years (1958-1966) there was no separate award for male and female singers.

Salma Agha is the only Pakistani singer to win Best Female Playback in the history of the awards.

Filmfare award for female playback has been shared only twice.

Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun (Khalnayak) in 1993
Shreya Ghoshal and Kavita Krishnamurty (Devdas) in 2002

The only female singers who have 100% nomination to winning ratio are Shreya Ghoshal and Jaspinder Narula. The former has been nominated and awarded twice and latter once.

The top five Female Playback singers on the basis of number of times they have won are:

  • Asha Bhosle – 7
  • Alka Yagnik – 6
  • Lata Mangeshkar – 4
  • Kavita Krishnamurty – 4
  • Anuradha Pudwal – 4

Another surprise package – Anuradha Paudwal and the melody queen Lata Mangeskar has received equal number of awards..

Is this statistics an end to the debate of who is better – Lata or Asha?? If we go by filmfare, then Asha is far much better singer than Lata.. But how fair is the filmfare – that we need to decided..

The top five Male Playback singers on the basis of the number of times they have won are:

  • Kishore Kumar -8
  • Mohd. Rafi- 6
  • Kumar Sanu- 5
  • Udit Naryan – 5
  • Mukesh – 4

Kumar Sanu has won Filmfare award for best male playback singer for 5 years consecutively.

The hattrick stars of Best Playback Male are Kishore Kumar (1982-1985) and Kumar Sanu (1990-1994).

Manna Dey has received only one filmfare award for ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo.. Rafi has said once – “You listen to my songs and I listen to Manna Dey songs”.. A singer like him has never received his due credit when it comes to filmfare while a copycat like Kumar Sanu gets 5 awards..

The artistes to have achieved a rare feat of having all the nominations to their credit in a particular year are as follows:

Mohammed Rafi – Best Male Playback (1968)
Asha Bhosle – Best Female Playback (1972)
Kishore Kumar – Best Male Playback (1984)
Alka Yagnik – Best Female Playback (1993)
Javed Akhtar – Best Lyricist (2004)

Shreya Ghoshal is the youngest singer to have won Best Female Playback award at the age of 18.

Prodigy Sunidhi Chauhan has not won a Filmfare award as yet inspite of being nominated twice. So has singer KK who has never won but has been nominated twice.

These are the facts about filmfare.. Why, music industry – when we consider the categories of actors/actresses, filmfare has been unfair many of them.. Filmfare is considered to be a dream award for many in the industry, but have they been fair to them??
